May 2020: Farm news
Farm Manager Olly Pemberton on the latest from Weir Farm
What a fantastic month of weather – so many people getting out and about in the countryside enjoying the sun.
On the farm, we have largely completed our growing programmes on the crops, with final fungicides applied to the winter crops – these sprays aim to protect the plants from any disease between now and harvest.
All fertiliser has been applied so Tom can finally have a break from his fertiliser spreader!
We have been collecting in silage for local dairy farms, which they store under an airtight sheet to ferment before feeding it – this provides feed through the winter as well as supplementing diets through the summer to ensure high quality milk is produced all year round.
The old saying of ‘don’t make hay in May’ has been tested at Weir Farm, with some beautiful meadow and rye hay now in the shed.
The final fields are still being collected and should provide excellent forage throughout the winter for horses locally.
Looking ahead, we are now preparing for the cereal harvest, with machinery servicing coming to a close and grain stores being cleaned ready for the new crop coming in. There is also our new chicken enterprise providing fresh eggs from the farm for sale at the gateway through our honesty box – what a treat!
Stay safe everybody.
