June 2020: Farm news

Farm Manager Olly Pemberton with the latest from Weir Farm

What a month! Lots of lovely hay in the sheds, plenty of good rain for the growing crops and lots of servicing in preparation for the busiest time of year.

We welcomed Manus, our harvest student at the beginning of the month and have managed to keep him busy since his arrival.

In the run up to the harvest, we have been finishing up servicing on machinery.

Particularly important has been testing all the brakes on our trailers, which has thrown some interesting results and repair work. It is all worth doing now though, rather than finding an issue when coming down a hill!

Our wildflower meadow is in full bloom and due to be harvested in the next few weeks. This is harvested and then the seed cleaned to be sold.

We will be selling some ourselves in small packets for gardens so get in touch if that is of interest to you.

As you look over the farm now, the familiar golden colour is appearing in the Winter Barley fields, and the Oilseed Rape is starting to turn brown.

Harvest looks like starting in the middle of July, and we can’t wait to get going. The old saying of ‘When you think the crop is ready, go on holiday for 2 weeks’ will be sorely tested this year.

We hope to see lots of people around the farm over the summer and do feel free to take pictures and tag us in them – we love seeing the farm from other perspectives.

- Olly
