Our wildlife initiatives

Over three generations at Weir Farm, we’ve seen the impact of the changing world on our local species.

But as farmers we’re uniquely placed to make a big difference.

The Weir Farm has a 10-year environmental plan, which we’ve been following since 2014. Through our conservation projects, we’ve seen our farmland become a haven for at-risk species.

Birds spotted at Weir Farm include to Tree Sparrow, Yellowhammer, Corn Bunting, Lapwings, Short Eared Owls and Skylarks.

We have resident deer, hare and rabbits, dormice and harvest mice, and a bustling pond full of frogs and insects.

And we’ve restored native hedgerows across the farm, which provide the perfect home for birds and small mammals.

We plant pollinator-friendly forage as part of a UK-wide ‘bee road’, and use our fallow fields to plant crops perfect for birds to feed on through the winter.

By practicing environmentally sensitive farming and investing our efforts into conservation, we’ve seen our chalk grassland busy with lots of helpful insects.

Marlborough Downs Space for Nature

As a member of the Marlborough Downs Space for Nature, we’ve been able to partner with neighbouring farms, joining together to shape a natural ‘landscape’ across the UK.

This enables us to be part of biodiversity conservation on an unprecedented scale, with the Weir Farm becoming a small part of a vast area of natural habitat for local wildlife.
